Chicken Leg Virtual Dissection Lab

Skin:
Observations:
a) Skin has a very defined separateness from the tissue below. Although it is attached via connective tissue, the skin layer moves separately and has a thicker texture.
b) Skin stretches and moves over the layers below, while still keeping its cohesive quality.
c) Skin is shiny and has a mottled texture.
d) Skin is dense, with cells compact together.
Connective Tissue:
Observations:
a) Connective tissue is web'like, with strands and shhets coonecting to each other at various vectors.
b) Connective tissue is shiny and reflective and has an appearance similar to Saran Wrap.
c) Connective tissue is sticky and stretchy.
d) Connective tissue traps air and water within it.
Blurry Screen Shot of Skin Being Pulled Away From Underlying Tissue, With Shiny Connective Tissue Exposed
This is Loose (Areolar) Connective Tissue.
Fat:
Observations:
a) Fat is a whitish, yellowish color.
b) Fat is elastic and loose, and easily torn.

Adipose Tissue stores fat. Adipocytes are the cells that store lipids.
Fat insulates and therefore helps to regulate body temperature. It is also a form of easily retrievable stored energy.

Muscle:
Observations:
a) The muscle bundles are arranged in cylindrical shapes and are surrounded by connective tissue.
b) The muscle bundles are grouped into a larger mass that is also surrounded by connective tissue.
From Muscle Cell to Muscle (Johnson 125)

This is Skeletal Muscle. This type of muscle contracts in order to create movement. It does so by using the bones it attaches to as levers. It also can help keep an organism at the proper core temperature through shivering.
It is striated, and responds only to nerve impulses. It is a voluntary type of muscle tissue.

I did not see a nerve in the virtual dissection, but here's a cool pic of muscle tissue~It's the dark stuff she is pointing to~

Tendons:
As tendons attach to bones, they join with the durable covering of the bone, the periosteum. As the the tendon attaches to the muscle, it also merges with the connective tissue that surrounds the muscle and fascicles. It is much stronger and denser than areolar tissue.

Not a Particularly Great Screen Shot of Cut Ligaments

Tendons and Ligaments differ in appearance in that ligaments appear to be denser than tendons, and tendons are more translucent and stretchy. Ligaments are made up of Dense Connective Tissue.

Bone:
The Bloody End of a Long Bone
This is a synovial joint. The knee joint is a hinge joint. It performs flexion and extension.
Bones are covered at the ends by a specialized connective tissue called cartilage. Its texture is very smooth.
Bones support the organism, protect vulnerable organs, and make it possible for us to move.
Inside a bone, we find red and yellow marrow. Osteocytes, osteoclasts, and osteoblasts make their home in bone, and red marrow contains stem cells that produce blood cells.
